Culturalization

Culturalization adapts a game to a market beyond translation: names, imagery, gestures, history and content that would land badly or be refused.

Translation makes a game understandable; culturalization makes it releasable. The questions are different in kind: does a symbol carry a meaning nobody intended, does a map or a flag touch a live political dispute, will an age rating board reject a scene, does a character name read as an insult. Finding this early is cheap. Finding it after launch means a patch, a withdrawal or a news cycle.

The work needs market knowledge and a willingness to argue, because most findings arrive as a request to change finished content. Good practice is a written assessment per market with a severity and an alternative, so the team can weigh a cosmetic change against a rebuild.

It sits next to translation QA, which checks the localised text in context, and next to localisation management, which owns the process. Culturalization asks the prior question: should this content ship here at all, and in what form.
