Cinematic Designer
A Cinematic Designer stages the scenes a game tells its story in: camera, blocking, timing and the hand-off between a cutscene and the moment the player takes over.
The work sits between narrative, animation and level design. A cinematic designer takes a script and builds it in the engine - placing cameras, blocking characters, timing cuts, and iterating from a rough blockout through previz to a polished scene. Much of the craft is in the seams: a scene has to start where the player left off and end where the game picks up again, without taking control away for longer than it earns.
Job ads for the role ask for engine work rather than film tools alone. Expect sequencer and scripting work, close cooperation with motion capture shoots and voice-over recording, and an eye on what the scene costs to run. Lead positions add scheduling, reviewing other people's scenes and setting the quality bar for all of them.
Not the same as an Animator, who authors the movement itself, and not the same as a Narrative Designer, who decides what is said. The cinematic designer decides how it is shown.
