MotionBuilder

MotionBuilder is the tool cinematic and animation teams use to turn motion capture takes into usable character performance: cleanup, retargeting, layering and scene assembly before the shot goes into the engine.

The software sits between the capture stage and the game. A take arrives as raw marker or skeleton data, and the work is to make it usable: fix dropped markers, fit the motion onto a character whose proportions differ from the performer's, layer corrections on top without destroying the original, and cut and blend takes so they read as one continuous performance.

Job ads ask for it alongside a general animation package, a real-time engine and motion capture experience, most often for cinematic work where whole scenes of several characters are assembled, timed and handed over as camera and animation data. Facial animation is frequently part of the same brief, since body and face are captured in the same session but processed separately.

What separates a candidate is not the interface but the handover: a scene whose naming, skeleton and take structure match the pipeline can be reused and re-exported later, while a one-off file cannot. Studios with a long-running capture library care about that more than about any single shot.
