Motion Capture Specialist

Motion capture specialists run the shoot and the data: calibrating the stage, recording performances and turning raw takes into animation the team can use.

The role covers a pipeline, not a single step. Before a shoot there is stage calibration, marker or suit setup and a shot list agreed with animation and design. During it, the specialist watches the live solve, calls bad takes and keeps the session on schedule. Afterwards comes the longer half: cleaning gaps and swapped markers, solving the data onto a skeleton, retargeting it to characters with different proportions, and checking that contacts with the ground and with props still hold.

Much of the work is patient correction, and small errors matter because a single bad frame is visible in motion. Studios that record regularly also expect the specialist to keep the stage, the naming conventions and the handover format in order, so that animators can pick up a take without asking questions.

Shaping the final performance in the engine is the animator's job; this role delivers the material that work starts from.
