Game Localization

Game localization covers translating in-game text and voice scripts, adapting them to each market and checking them inside the running build.

Postings tagged with game localization split into two kinds of work. One is the language itself: translating UI strings, item names, quest text and voice-over scripts, keeping a term base consistent across an entire title, and rewriting lines that only work in the source culture. The other is linguistic quality assurance, where the translated build is played through and every string is checked in context for truncation, overlap, wrong variables and the wrong register.

What makes the work specific to games is that the text is never a finished document. Strings carry placeholders, change with every patch, and have to fit a button that was designed for English. Character limits, gendered grammar and plural rules decide how a line can be phrased at all, and the same source string can appear in a menu, a subtitle and a push notification.

The hands-on language and LQA work sits here. The scheduling, vendor and budget side of the same process is tagged as Localisation Management.
