Facial Animation
Facial animation covers the performance of a character's face: lip sync, expression and the small motion that keeps a head from looking dead.
The work splits into rig and performance. On the rig side it is blendshapes or joint setups, a consistent set of controls across a cast, and a mapping that lets one performance drive several faces. On the performance side it is lip sync against recorded dialogue, eye darts and blinks, brow and jaw work, and the timing that makes an expression read at the distance the camera actually uses.
Pipelines vary more than in body animation. Some projects capture faces and clean up the solve, some drive mouths procedurally from audio and hand-animate only the key moments, and most mix both depending on whether a line is a cutscene or a barked one-liner. Postings therefore ask which of those a candidate has shipped.
It is judged by a stricter audience than the rest of animation, because people read faces for a living without noticing.
